Alice in Wonderland costume

Wouldn’t your daughter look fabulous in an Alice in Wonderland costume?

The 1951 Disney film Alice in Wonderland is probably the best known version featuring this character; however, the story actually comes from a novel written by Lewis Carroll (aka Charles Lutwidge Dodgson) who was an English author.

The actual name of the novel is Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

Disney based their version on this novel along with Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There, also written by Lewis Carroll.

An Alice in Wonderland costume is easy to create.

Alice is usually depicted wearing a short sleeved blue dress with a white apron-like overage. Notice her nice pockets? They add a storybook touch!

She has long, blonde hair that is often tied back in costumes with a red or blue ribbon or headband. There are wigs available that perfectly fit the Alice persona.

It’s hard to see in this picture, but Alice is also wearing a gold locket around her neck.

Her shoes are open sandals with a strap around the ankle.

Your Alice could carry a tote from the Alice in Wonderland movie, a Cheshire Cat bag or even a Mad Hatter tote, to reinforce the character.

In our next picture, you can see that Alice is wearing black and white striped tights.

You could go for red and white stripes, too, if you like.

These stripey tights are a great addition to any Alice costume I think!

And you’ll also notice she’s wearing a blue headband and a large red sash style belt around her waist.

Brothers and sisters or a group of friends who want to dress in a theme could join Alice!

The most popular character costumes include the Mad Hatter, the Queen of Hearts, the White Rabbit, the Caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat, and the animated playing cards.

And don’t forget Tweedledee and Tweedledum!

The story and movie background

The Alice in Wonderland story is a fantasy based on the girl’s dream of living in her own world.
Alice and her kitten, Dinah follow a rabbit down a rabbit hole.

Once in Wonderland, the adventures are filled with interesting characters and oddities.

The characters include the Mad Hatter, a Caterpillar, Cheshire Cat, March Hare, the Queen of Hearts and the King of Hearts, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, the Dodo, the White Rabbit, a Doorknob who talks, Bill the Lizard, a Bird in Tree, a Snooty Flower, a Rose and a White Rose, the Dormouse, the Mellomen, talking cards, and flamingos of various colors.

In 2010, an Alice in Wonderland movie directed by Tim Burton was released.

You can see Alice’s pretty blue costume here:

In this movie, Alice is nineteen years old and revisits the adventures in Wonderland. The role of Alice is played by Mia Wasikowska and the ever famed Johnny Depp plays as the Mad Hatter.

Back in 1931, Carroll’s book received some criticism and was banned in some schools and cities because of animals talking and expletives that opposed common beliefs; however, nowadays such stories are commonly accepted as fictional fantasy and quite honestly, I haven’t seen anything in the Disney film that I would oppose to my children watching.

An Alice in Wonderland costume is sure to make a hit for trick or treating or a costume party. I’m certain your girl or teen would love to dress like Alice.
