A Luna Lovegood costume makes a fantastic Harry Potter themed costume for girls!
Luna is such an interesting person – dreamy, imaginative – and clever, too. And her clothes and accessories – wowee! She’s got a very weird dress sense, which is great for anyone dressing up as her.
In appearance, Luna is known for having waist length hair of a dirty blonde color that is almost always unkempt. Any Luna Lovegood costume simply must be complemented by this kind of hair, so some girls will need to wear a wig.
Luna’s school uniform
Luna wore many costumes in the movies. Most popular is probably the Hogwarts school uniform – a black robe with a crest of the Ravenclaw house over a white shirt with a tie that matches the house colors which are blue and bronze for the Ravenclaw house.
The girls wore a skirt and tights or socks with black shoes. From time to time, they also wore vests or sweaters.
Luna’s Christmas tree dress
Luna Lovegood also looked fabulous in her Christmas dress that she wore when accompanying Harry Potter to Slughorn’s Christmas party.
The movie version of the dress was wonderful – a three-tiered shimmery silvery pink number, each tier edged with silver lacy ruffles. She wore this dress with earth brown stockings – shock! Oh, and silver shoes 🙂
Luna’s yellow dress for Fleur and Bill’s wedding
Luna is brightly dressed for the wedding, and in the book her outfit is described as follows:
“Luna was wearing bright yellow robes, which she had accessorised with a large sunflower in her hair.”
She tells Harry that her father thinks sun colors are lucky to wear to a wedding.
Quite how this Luna Lovegood costume will appear in the movie is difficult to predict, although I may have caught a glimpse of a girl in a yellow dress (rather than robes) in a video preview. We’ll just have to wait and see!
Luna Lovegood accessories
Evanna created her own patronus bracelet for the Slug Club Christmas party, made from twisted tinsel. She shows off her creation on the Half Blood Prince DVD in the special features section.
Accessories for a Luna Lovegood costume might include a wand or perhaps a copy of The Quibbler magazine that her father, Xenophilius Lovegood, edited. Luna Lovegood seems to believe everything printed in it, even though it seems to be utter nonsense! She reads it upside down 🙂
Tip: To get ideas for making your own Quibbler front page, search Google Images for The Quibbler.
Luna Lovegood’s radish earrings can add a wonderful authentic touch to a costume.
And don’t forget her butterbeer cork necklace – this one looks very simple to put together.
Who is… loony Luna?
The character of Luna Lovegood was played by the beautiful Irish actress, Evanna Lynch. She first appeared in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix which was made in 2007. She was pretty amazing in the role, especially when you consider that it was her first film. Her previous acting experience only included participating in school plays. When it comes to acting, she is quite a natural.
In 2009, she was cast in the role of Luna Lovegood in the sixth film of the series, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and in the final film of the series Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. She also appeared in the video games associated with the series.
The character of Luna Lovegood seems somewhat isolated in school and doesn’t seem to care about what others think. Being a witch raised by a single father after the death of her mother, she developed amazing powers such as the ability to see Thestrals – magical winged horses that could only be seen by those have witnessed and accepted death.
What makes the character is the way that Luna Lovegood talks. Logic doesn’t mean a thing to her. Rather, she lives on faith. She is an odd girl that is often ridiculed by other students which earned her the nickname “Loony Lovegood”. She is extraordinarily perceptive and speaks the blunt truth. When she speaks, she sounds kind of dreamy and she doesn’t pay attention to things that she doesn’t find interesting.
There are many scenes in the Harry Potter series that feature Luna Lovegood that can be simulated to create a theme for family or friend costumes. Luna Lovegood was part of Dumbledore’s Army. She accompanied Harry, Ron, Hermione, Ginny, and Neville in a conflict with the Death Eaters. She was also good friends with Dobby the House Elf. Later in life, she married Rolf Scamander and had twins which were named Lorcan and Lysander.
So a Luna Lovegood costume really is an exceptionally original idea for your child’s next dress up!
