Which little girl doesn’t want to wear a Princess Leia Costume? This is a totally cool costume for girls!
Princess Leia is brave, feisty, independent and oh-so-feminine, even when she’s dressed in combat gear. What a terrific combination!
Now, a Princess Leia costume can come in several different styles, depending on whether Leia was dressed as a princess, warrior, or leader.
There is one Princess Leia look which is particularly common, but it’s not the only option. Let’s take a look at a few different takes on Princess Leia that can help you or your daughter stand out at a costume party.
The “original” Princess Leia costume
The most common Leia costume you will come across is the white robe outfit from the very first Star Wars movie, Episode 4: A New Hope. This is the clothing Leia is wearing in her holographic recorded message. Remember that one?
“Help me Obi Wan Kenobi; you’re my only hope”
– and wasn’t Luke fascinated by this handsome woman!
This costume is made up of a simple white one-piece robe, fastened in the middle with a white belt. The robe came up as far as Leia’s neck and ended just above her shoes, which were also white.
Of course, the key to this look is the trademark Princess Leia hairstyle. Her hair is plaited and curled up in a kind of “earmuff” look on both sides of her head. If you have long hair to work with, you can achieve this look with plaits and hair clips. Alternatively, you can simply buy a headband with the hair spirals attached.
Leia also used a small black laser gun in the first movie, so you can include that as an accessory.
Leia’s combat costume
In Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back, Leia appears in a jumpsuit for the Battle of Hoth. This outfit consists of the white jumpsuit, white gloves and grey boots up to knee height. The jumpsuit should tuck in to the boots. Leia’s hair style this time was a plait circled around the back of the head.
There is also a slightly different jumpsuit costume for Princess Leia. Again the jumpsuit should be white or cream, but in this case it should be paired with white leather shoes under the jumpsuit legs. There are no gloves with this costume, but you can include a black laser gun.
There is also the rebel outfit Leia wears when fighting on the Ewok planet of Endor in Episode 6: The Return of the Jedi.
This should consists of a very loose green and brown camouflage overshirt that looks like a poncho. This should be wrapped in a black belt with a holster for a laser pistol.
For the bottom half Leia has blue-grey, loose fitting pants with a thin yellow stripe down each side, which tuck in to black boots.
Ceremonial Princess Leia costume
At the end of Episode 4, Leia wears a ceremonial outfit. This is similar to her original outfit, but there are a few key differences.
Her white robe has a lower neckline, and she has several silver accessories: a silver belt, silver shoes and a silver necklace. Instead of the hair spirals on each side of the head, this Leia look has a single hair spiral on the top of the head, almost like a plaited version of the retro “beehive” hair do. Wow!
